Were has rejoined Mathare United after 14 years, having come through their Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) system.

Former AFC Leopards and Tusker FC winger Paul Were was among the players unveiled by Mathare United following the conclusion of their transfer activity in the mid-season transfer window.

Were had become a free agent since leaving Rwandese outfit Rayon Sports, a club he had spent the last year at.

The winger, who has the capability of making direct runs into the box and creating chances, has marked a return to the club he last played for 14 years ago.

Were then moved to Tusker where he won the league title, before moving to AFC Leopards where he spent two years before commencing his professional journey in what has proven to be trotting the globe with stints for various clubs in South Africa, Kazakhstan, and Greece.

Were will be integral to Mathare as they seek a return to the Kenyan top flight at the very first time of asking.

The 30-year-old has made 29 caps for Kenya and scored three goals and in 2019, was part of the team that represented the country at the Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt.

On January 17, the club announced that they had also signed Donald Ange, Mohammed Kilume, Stephen Okola, Athman Ali, Boaz Maeri, Daniel Odhiambo, and Kevin Alloys.

Kilume, Odhiambo, Okola, and Ange made their debuts during their 2-0 victory over Silibwet Leons

Ange returned for a second stint with the club and scored the second against Silibwet. He had found game time at Sharks difficult to come by.

The Congolese scored six goals before suffering an injury that kept him out for the second leg of a disappointing campaign that ended with relegation last season.

Apart from Were, Kilume and Okola also bring experience to the table as they seek promotion back to the Premier League.

Kilume joined from KCB while Okola departed Sofapaka for the famous Yellow and Green of Mathare.

Odhiambo, Maeri, and Alloys joined from NSL rivals Kibera Black Stars, Nairobi United, and Gusii FC respectively.

They all featured against the club earlier in the season for their respective former sides and impressed the coaching staff immensely.

Athman is a striker and has made the leap from regional side Kibwezi FC.
