Why the Mashemeji Derby was postponed

The delay in hosting the match stemmed from a lack of suitable venues capable of accommodating what is considered a high-risk fixture.

The country's three primary stadiums — Nyayo, Kasarani, and the Ulinzi Sports Complex — were all temporarily closed for renovations in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya is co-hosting with Uganda and Tanzania in August 2024.

“We understand the frustrations that came with the postponement, but ensuring the safety of fans and players is our top priority. Now that Nyayo Stadium is available and match-ready, we’re all set for what promises to be an electrifying encounter,” a source from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) said.

The Mashemeji Derby is more than just a football match — it’s a cultural phenomenon. Year after year, it draws thousands of passionate supporters donning blue for AFC Leopards (Ingwe) and green for Gor Mahia (K’Ogalo), as the two sides reignite a rivalry that spans over five decades. This season’s first leg, officially listed as Match No. 79 in the FKF Premier League fixture list, could prove pivotal in shaping the title race.

The standings only add fuel to the fire, with both teams eyeing a strong finish to the season. Gor Mahia, who are reigning derby kings, will be looking to extend their dominance after winning both legs last season — 2-0 in the first leg and 1-0 in the return.
