FOOTBALL Mohammed Juma Njuguna: The legendary voice that echoed across generations of football fans
Honoring the legacy of the pioneering sports presenter whose commentary united fans across East Africa.
Mbotela’s impact on Kenyan sports broadcasting is immeasurable as over five decades, his energetic voice brought games to life, making him a household name before his retirement in 2022.
His signature phrase Kadenge na Mpira remains in the memories of many football lovers who grew up listening to his match commentaries.
During his prime, Mbotela dominated the airwaves at Voice of Kenya (VOK) – later renamed Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) – as one of the most authoritative Swahili commentators.
Whether narrating Mashemeji derby or a local league game his voice became synonymous with passion and precision.
“It is true my father-in-law has passed on,” Anne Mbotela told The Star, confirming the sad news.
Mbotela was born in 1940 in Mombasa’s Frere Town, the eldest of eight siblings. His love for media was sparked during his school days at Kitui High School, where he often read out news to his dorm mates.
Inspired by veteran journalists such as Steven Kikumu and Job Isaac Mwamto, he pursued his passion, despite lacking formal training in journalism. His career kicked off at Kenya Weekly News as a trainee reporter before transitioning to the East African Standard as a Swahili reporter. However, it was at VOK where his star truly shone.
His journey into football commentary began unexpectedly during a match between Kenya and Uganda at City Stadium.
His seniors, Steven Kikumu and Simeon Desanjo, invited him to tag along and, during halftime, handed him the microphone.

The iconic exclamation, Salaaaala… Salaaaalalala!!!, often followed by euphoric cheers, is one that many still fondly remember.
Beyond sports, Mbotela was a multifaceted journalist. He wrote, hosted television shows, read news, and presented special programs that endeared him to audiences beyond the football fraternity.
