Malawi Super League champions Nyasa Big Bullets part ways with key Kenyan defender after nine months, following the expiry of his contract.

Malawi Super League side Nyasa Big Bullets have announced the departure of Kenyan defender Collins Okumu, marking the end of his nine-month tenure with the team.

The club confirmed on Friday that it would not be renewing Okumu's contract, which has recently expired.

Okumu's exit is part of a broader reshuffle at Nyasa Big Bullets, with seven other players also being released.

Despite the departure of these players, Clyde Senaji, another Kenyan player, remains with the team.

"FCB Nyasa Big Bullets confirms the list of players that have been released following the conclusion of the 2023 season. Rabson Chiyenda, Righteous Banda, McFallen Mgwira, Chinedu Okafor, Collins Okumu, Eric Kaonga, Rahaman John, and White Kitsen have been released ahead of the 2024 season. In addition, Bullets confirms that Peter Banda has also departed following the expiry of his contract," the club stated in an official release.

The club expressed its gratitude towards the departing players, acknowledging their contributions.

"Everyone at the club would like to thank all of these players for their contributions to FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and wish them the very best of luck for the future," the statement added.

Okumu, a former player for Bidco United, had been sidelined in recent weeks due to injury but was considered a key player during his time with the Bullets.

His stint in Malawi was marked by notable success, as he helped the team secure four trophies, the most recent being the Airtel Top 8.

Under his influence, the team also clinched the Super League, FDH Bank Cup, and the inaugural Castel Challenge Cup.

Reflecting on his time with Nyasa Big Bullets, Okumu said, "It's been an incredible journey with the Bullets. I am grateful for the opportunities and successes we shared. I'll always cherish the memories and lessons learned here."

Okumu's contribution to the team was significant, despite scoring only one goal during his stay.

His memorable moment came in a 5-1 victory over Dedza Dynamos in the semifinals of the FDH Bank Cup back in September, where he found the back of the net in a crucial match.
