Many with a keen following of Kenyan football refer to Owino as ‘Messi’ and he has now explained why.

Kenya Police FC midfielder cum defender David ‘Messi’ Owino has explained the reason he earned the nickname of arguably the greatest ever footballer to have graced a pitch.

Like Argentine great Lionel Mesi, Owino is diminutive, left-footed, and a quick mover with sleek feet, and the way he plays naturally draws comparisons to the FIFA World Cup winner.

Speaking to Pulse Sports, Owino, who is expected to move to Taiwan for trials with Tainan City next week has now explained how he ended up getting dubbed ‘Messi’.

“The coach did it because I think he thought that my movements in training gave him the idea that I would do a job there (number 10 role),” Owino said.

“I used to do a job there before moving to left back, playing left back was a makeshift decision.

“I enjoy it a lot and you know you need to grab the chance you are given. Against Homeboyz, I played in an offensive role so the coach saw it fit to play there because it's not new to me. That is why I get nicknamed ‘Messi’."

Meanwhile, the former Mathare United and KCB player believes that Police can still catch up with Gor Mahia, who are ahead of them by 13 points in the table and also revealed the side’s ultimate targets.

“The top team has only left us by 13 points which is not a lot. Those are roughly just four games and the second leg is just starting.

“Our aim is to play CAF football. Either we can win the cup or we can win the title. But we have to find a way to play it next season.”
