Abana Abeingo captain Moses Mudavadi shares emotional reflections following their triumphant Lidonde Cup victory

Kakamega Homeboyz captain Moses Mudavadi has revealed that his team was more than prepared to clinch victory against Ingo Derby rivals AFC Leopards in the 2023 Elijah Lidonde Cup final.

The final, held at the iconic Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, showcased the indomitable spirit of both teams, and Davies Kasirye's 75th-minute strike sealed the deal for Homeboyz.

It was a chance for Homeboyz to seek redemption after suffering a painful 2-0 loss to AFC Leopards in a recent FKF Premier League encounter.

Homeboyz skipper Moses Mudavadi spoke about the significance of the final and the determination that fueled their victory.

"It was a great final. We were prepared for them since they had beaten us in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League, and here we were at home," said Mudavadi.

The 28-year-old attacking midfidler acknowledged that the tussles and incidents during the match were a testament to the fierce rivalry that exists between these two teams.

"There were some tussles during the match, and such incidents happened because there was so much pressure, but that defines our rivalry,' he added.

The Elijah Lidonde Cup, named in honor of former AFC Leopards great, has become an annual spectacle that brings together some of the best football talents in Kenya.

This year's tournament featured four formidable teams: AFC Leopards, Kakamega Homeboyz, Nzoia Sugar FC, and Mulembe United FC.

The competition, held over two days, showcased the passion and commitment of these teams to pay homage to a football legend.

In the 2022 edition of the tournament, AFC Leopards emerged victorious with an 8-7 win in a post-match penalty shootout against Nzoia Sugar at Bukhungu Stadium.

This victory only added fuel to the already burning rivalry between AFC Leopards and Kakamega Homeboyz, setting the stage for the dramatic 2023 final.

Homeboyz not only secured the coveted Elijah Lidonde Cup but also earned a handsome prize of Ksh1 million in prize money. In contrast, AFC Leopards received Ks500,000 for their valiant efforts.
