What is the Harambee Stars' next course of action having withdrawn from the CECAFA Four Nations tournament ahead of CHAN 2024?
Harambee Stars have been dealt a significant blow in their preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 following their unexpected withdrawal from the CECAFA Four Nations tournament.
The regional showpiece, which kicked off without Kenya’s participation on Monday, July 21, was widely seen as a critical litmus test for Benni McCarthy's locally-based squad ahead of the continental challenge set to begin on August 2.
The withdrawal came as a surprise, especially considering that CHAN 2024 will be co-hosted by Kenya alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
The tournament was expected to offer McCarthy a chance to assess team chemistry, test tactical setups, and trim his final squad against familiar regional opponents under competitive conditions.

A Missed Opportunity in the CECAFA Warm-Up

The CECAFA Four Nations tournament was tailored to simulate CHAN’s intensity and provide match rhythm to local-based players, who often lack consistent top-tier game time compared to their foreign-based counterparts.
With Kenya opting out, that opportunity is now gone, raising questions about whether the Stars will be adequately battle-hardened by the time the tournament kicks off.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) sighted unsuitable prevailing conditions as the cause for the withdrawal.

In a statement confirming the pull-out, FKF assured fans that all energy will now be channelled into domestic preparations.
“The team will return to Kenya and resume preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, with full focus now shifting to ensuring optimal readiness for the assignment ahead," read part of the statement.
That leaves Benni McCarthy and his technical bench with less than two weeks to fine-tune the squad through intense training camps, intra-squad friendlies, and possibly closed-door matches against local Premier League sides.
The side has already had such friendlies with the Harambee Stars taking on a select Kariobangi Sharks side in a loss that saw a squad overhaul.
The absence of international competitive fixtures, however, casts a shadow over the tactical sharpness and competitive resilience the players can build in time.
