The government has settled payments and resumed work on Kirigiti Stadium, aiming for completion ahead of CHAN 2025 and future events.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has announced that the government has settled outstanding payments and unlocked access to the long-delayed Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu County.

The move paves the way for the finalization of remaining works as the venue prepares to serve as a training ground for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August.

Mvurya revealed that Sports Kenya will now take over the facility and oversee the remaining finishing works in collaboration with the contractor.

"The Government has settled outstanding payments and unlocked access to Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu County. Sports Kenya will now take over the facility and work closely with the contractor to complete the remaining finishing works," he stated.

With this development, the primary focus will be on restoring the canopy grass to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, ensuring the stadium's readiness for CHAN.

"Our focus is to restore the canopy grass to Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, ensuring the stadium is ready to serve as a training ground for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August," Mvurya added.

The stadium has long been touted as a flagship sports infrastructure project, intended to serve national teams, including the Harambee Stars.

However, its construction has been marred by significant delays, frustrating sports fans and the local community.

Located just two kilometers from Kiambu Town, Kirigiti Stadium has been under construction for several years, with a substantial investment of Ksh 650million as per Nation.

Despite being declared 90% complete a year and a half ago, little progress had been made until now.

Last year, the government designated Kirigiti Stadium, along with Nairobi’s Ulinzi Complex, as alternative venues for national team matches due to planned renovations at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums.

Beyond its sporting significance, Mvurya emphasized the stadium’s potential to drive economic growth in Kiambu County and the surrounding region.

"Beyond sports, the strategically located facility is poised to become a key economic driver for Kiambu County and the broader region. I was joined by Kiambu County Governor H.E. Dr. Kimani Wamatangi, Sports PS Eng. Peter Tum, Sports Kenya CEO Komora, MCA, and senior government officials," he concluded.

The delays surrounding Kirigiti Stadium have left many Kenyans puzzled, particularly after the initial plan to launch the facility before the 2022 general elections was abruptly canceled.

In August 2023, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Venue Inspection Committee gave the green light for the stadium to be used, but the anticipated full opening never materialized.
