Muyonga's spotkick seals a 4-2 victory for Gor Mahia in FKF Charity Shield final.

Gor Mahia managed to lift their seventh FKF Charity Shield trophy after beating a reselient Kakamega Homeboyz 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in a match played at the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday.

The first half did not produce much to rewrite about, with no team really managing to create any real inroads in the other side’s half.

Gor mahia’s first real attempt came in the 18th minute when Lawrence Juma attempted a low drilled shot from distance towards Kakamega Homeboyz keeper Farouk Shikalo, but it was not enough to really test him.

They had another chance in the 32nd minute when right back Rony Onyango found himself in acres of space near the byline after a nicely constructed interchange of passes with his winger John Macharia, but no one got on the end of his cross.

Homeboyz’s first real opportunity came in the 41st minute when Moses Shummah found himself through on goal after Hillary Otieno found him with a neat through ball, but his left footed attempt sailed wide of Caleb Otieno’s net.

Both sides decided to make early changes in the second half, and it had to take until the 55th minute for Gor to make the first attempt when substitute Lyson Muyonga was put through on goal, but his shot sailed wide of the target.

Gor had suddenly found themselves on the front foot. They nearly went ahead just a minute later through another substitute Alpha Onyango, whose shot was deflected wide for a corner.

K’ogalo would take the lead from the resulting corner when Onyango hit the corner straight at Boniface Omondi, who was lurking on the edge of the box, before unleashing a ferocious shot that was deflected in in the 61st minute.

Their lead was short lived though, as Homeboyz equalized in the 71st minute after a poorly defended freekick by Gor resulted in Eric Ambunya scoring on the rebound after keeper Omondi failed to claim the ball well first time.

After that, both teams just could not get the better of each other, with the game resembling a damp squib, and the winner had to be decided on penalties.

Lyson Muyonga would score what would prove to be the decisive penalty, to ensure Gor Mahia won a record seventh Shield title to give them something to smile about ahead of the new FKFPL season.
