Gabon coach Thierry Mouyouma has explained why his star-studded squad are faced with an extra bit of pressure as they eye a World Cup ticket.

Gabon coach Thierry Mouyouma has added pressure on his charges as they look to deliver a World Cup ticket to their fans back home.

The Panthers are in Nairobi to face The Gambia in their penultimate World Cup qualifier on Friday and must win to stay alive in the race for an automatic slot as they are already assured of second place in Group F.

Gabon have two tricky matches away to The Gambia and at home to Burundi and must win both while hoping that Ivory Coast drop points as the African champions lead the group with 20 points while they have 19.

If they cannot do it, then they will hope to among the four best second-placed teams heading to the playoffs and there is also pressure here as other sides could overtake them, hence the need to keep their eyes on the ball.

“We want to win our two games and go to the World Cup. We are in a good mood and preparing for the game against The Gambia and both teams are playing away so it is important to win that game and then we play Burundi at home, we hope to win that game as well,” Mouyouma told the media in Nairobi.

What is Giving Gabon Coach Confidence?

“Also, I think that what we saw in yesterday’s matches, several teams are coming into the top four playoff positions so we are still under pressure so we need to win.”

Mouyouma says what is also giving his players extra motivation is the fact that most of them are in the twilight years of their careers, such as 36-year-ole star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and this is their last chance to seal a World Cup ticket.

“World Cup for us is like a dream for this country, for me and our players. Some of our players in four years’ time will be retiring and in football, playing a World Cup is so important and that is the target,” he added.

“Secondly as a country, we know Ivory Coast are first so if we do not get top position, we have to be in the playoffs.”

The Gabon coach is sweating over the fitness of Galatasaray midfielder Mario Lemina but has faith that the rest of the squad will do the job against Johnathan McKinstry’s team.
