Amajita impressed in a thrilling group-stage finale, showing resilience and belief to secure a historic FIFA U-20 World Cup knockout spot.

South Africa sealed their place in the knockout stages of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025 with a spirited 2–1 win over the United States in Rancagua on Sunday — a result that marks their best-ever group stage performance at the global showpiece.

The African champions showed remarkable composure and fighting spirit, overturning an early deficit to record back-to-back victories and secure progression to the Round of 16 for the first time since Egypt 2009.

South Africa’s win also confirmed a historic achievement — finishing second in Group E on goal difference, having collected six points from three games.

Amajita, guided by coach Raymond Mdaka, delivered a display full of tactical discipline and attacking purpose.

Despite falling behind early, they refused to panic, regrouping quickly to find rhythm and control. Their growing confidence and belief were evident as they outplayed a strong USA side that had entered the match as group leaders.

“It was a performance full of heart and character,” said South Africa coach Raymond Mdaka.

“We showed good tactical awareness and played with belief. The boys wanted this result, and they earned it. We must now prepare for the next challenge with the same hunger.”

The United States took an early lead through Noah Cobb in the 12th minute, heading home a well-delivered free-kick from Matthew Corcoran.

But South Africa’s response was immediate. Just six minutes later, pressure from Siviwe Magidigidi forced an equalizer as the forward nodded in his third goal of the tournament — keeping up his fine scoring form and lifting his teammates’ morale.

Kekana Shines As Amajita Take Control

Once back on level terms, Amajita began to dominate possession, pressing high and attacking with speed.

Their efforts paid off just before half-time when Shakeel April’s perfectly timed cut-back found Gomolemo Kekana unmarked inside the box. The young midfielder made no mistake, calmly slotting past USA goalkeeper Adam Beaudry to give South Africa a deserved 2–1 lead.

After the break, the Americans pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but South Africa’s defense — marshalled confidently by Mamelodi Sundowns youngster Thato Sibiya — held firm.

Goalkeeper Fletcher Hani Smythe-Lowe produced a composed performance, while the backline showed maturity beyond their years to contain the USA’s attacking threats.

The African champions also created chances to extend their advantage. Kekana’s long-range effort was tipped over by Beaudry, and Mfundo Vilakazi came close late on, only to be denied by another sharp save. Despite late pressure from the USA, Amajita held their shape and saw out the game with poise.

“It’s a proud moment for the team and for South African football,” added Mdaka after the final whistle.

“We’ve worked hard for this, and the players have shown real growth. Now we look forward to facing Colombia — it will be a tough match, but we believe in our ability.”

The victory means South Africa will now face Group F winners Colombia in the Round of 16 — a clash that promises to test their tactical discipline and attacking flair.

The South Americans have impressed so far in the tournament, but Amajita’s confidence and momentum could make them dangerous opponents.
