The Liverpool star died in a fiery crash, but a truck driver’s eyewitness account could challenge what investigators believe happened.
An eyewitness has come forward to insist that Diogo Jota was not speeding in the tragic Lamborghini crash that claimed the lives of the Liverpool footballer and his younger brother, Andre Silva.
Truck driver Jose Azevedo, who filmed the first video of the burning car, has publicly disputed preliminary findings by Spanish police suggesting the £180,000 Lamborghini Huracan was exceeding the speed limit when it veered off the A-52 motorway in Zamora, northwestern Spain.

Jota, 28, and Silva, 26, were travelling to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK after the Premier League star was advised not to fly following recent lung surgery. Their 200mph supercar reportedly suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking at around 12.35am, careening off the road before it burst into flames.
“I filmed it, stopped, tried to help, but unfortunately, there was nothing I could do,” Azevedo said in a video recorded from his truck cab as per Daily Mail.
“I have a clear conscience. I know what I went through that night because I didn’t know who was inside. My condolences to the family.”
Police maintain that their forensic analysis shows the Lamborghini was speeding and have stated that all tests conducted so far point to Jota being behind the wheel at the moment of the crash.

'She Showed That I Should Have Stayed Longer' – Usain Bolt Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce
Usain Bolt paid a touching tribute to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, admitting her enduring greatness made him feel he retired too soon.
Dangerous Highway and Conflicting Accounts
Azevedo, however, remains adamant that the car was travelling within the legal limit when the fatal incident unfolded on the dark and poorly maintained stretch of highway.
“The family have my word that they were not speeding. I could see the make of the car, the colour of the car. I drive this road every day, Monday through Saturday, I know what road it is, and it’s worthless,” he said.
He described the A-52 motorway as notoriously treacherous, with frequent potholes, poor lighting, and recurrent fog creating deadly conditions. Just hours before Jota’s accident, a 60-year-old woman was seriously injured on the same road after her car veered off course and left her trapped.
In 2023 alone, there were 19 reported accidents on this stretch, averaging 1.5 deaths per incident. Local reports have documented nearly 40 pothole complaints in a single month and thousands of speeding fines.

Despite the notorious reputation of the A-52, Azevedo contends that reckless driving was not to blame in this case.
“It’s a dark road, and I could see the make and colour of the car, everything perfectly. Later on, unfortunately, that’s how it ended,” he repeated.
