Omondi, a late call-up to the squad, has quickly established himself as one of Kenya’s standout performers, replicating the form that made him a first-choice pick under former coach Engin Firat in 2023.

The new Gor Mahia shot-stopper was named Man of the Match in the memorable victory over Morocco, producing a commanding display that included four saves, two high claims, and flawless defensive organisation.

It was his second clean sheet of the tournament, following another assured performance against DR Congo in the opener.

While an error against Angola — a delayed ball release that led to Marvin Nabwire’s dismissal — blotted his record, Omondi has otherwise been a picture of confidence between the posts.

Joseph’s Support Has Been Massive - Omondi

Speaking after the Morocco match, the former Manguo High School student from Limuru credited both Josephs and his fellow keepers, Farouk Shikhalo and Sepstianos Wekesa, for his form.

“The support I have been getting from my fellow goalkeepers, as well as our goalkeeping training, has been massive and has taken my game to another level. That’s why I have been performing at my best so far,” Omondi said.

Josephs, a former South Africa international born in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town, enjoyed a distinguished career with clubs such as Cape Town Spurs, Ajax Cape Town, Bidvest Wits, and Orlando Pirates — where he became one of the country’s most recognisable goalkeepers. Since transitioning into coaching, he has worked with several top clubs, including AmaZulu.

Omondi also spoke about the team’s motivation at CHAN 2024, dismissing claims that financial rewards from President William Ruto were the main driving force.

“People are fuelled by the fact it’s the first time this tournament is being held in the country. They are motivated and want to do their best,” he explained.

He dedicated his Man of the Match award to his family, saying their constant prayers, calls, and encouragement had kept him going.

“When the game starts, a crucial save gets a goalkeeper fully tuned in. That’s the save that really made me find my rhythm,” Omondi added.

With two clean sheets and a growing reputation, Omondi will be central to Kenya’s hopes as CHAN 2024 heads into its decisive stages.
