Harambee Stars forward Edward ‘Ondimo’ Omondi could not hide his joy after making his long-awaited debut for the national team during Kenya’s 1-1 draw with Angola in their second Group A clash at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Thursday, August 7 at Kasarani Stadium.

Omondi, recalled to the squad as a replacement for Mohammed Bajaber — who joined Tanzanian giants Simba — was handed a starting role on the right wing by coach Benni McCarthy.

It was a golden opportunity for the former Rainbow FC man to showcase his ability on the ball.

The youngster worked tirelessly, tracking back to assist full-back Daniel Sakari and later adjusting to a more defensive role after Marvine Nabwire’s first-half red card.

In the second half, McCarthy switched to a back five, with Omondi moving into a central forward position. He was substituted in the 78th minute for Ben Stanley Omondi but left the pitch satisfied with his contribution.

“I feel great and amazing. I feel honored to be wearing the national team jersey,” Omondi told the media. “This is a day I will never forget. I’ll mark it on all my calendars.”

From Dandora to Kasarani

For Omondi, who grew up in Dandora, the occasion marked a significant leap. He had grown used to playing in front of around 5,000 fans at Dandora Stadium, but Saturday’s atmosphere was a whole different experience.

“In terms of turnout, the atmosphere at Dandora does not even compare to this one here at Kasarani. Fifty thousand people watching you, expecting more — there’s pressure,” he admitted.

Now with a taste of top-level international football, the Kenya Police striker is confident this is just the beginning. “This has been a huge step and I know things will be smooth from here on out. The way I was training, I knew I was always going to start,” he said.

Omondi also had a message for the fans ahead of Kenya’s upcoming matches against Morocco and Zambia. “Today’s draw was for the fans. Let them turn up in large numbers and come support us,” he urged.

Kenya remain unbeaten in the tournament with four points from two matches, sitting in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages — with Omondi now firmly in the picture.
