Kenyan referees Stephen Yiembe and Gilbert Cheruiyot have been showered with praise for overseeing an incident-free CAF Champions League final.

Kenyan referees Stephen Yiembe and Gilbert Cheruiyot have been lauded for their impressive performance during the CAF Champions League final on Sunday.

Egyptian side Pyramids won the CAF Champions League for the first time in their history after beating South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the second leg and 3-2 on aggregate at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo on Sunday.

Congolese forward Fiston Mayele and Ahmed Samy scored for Pyramids while Iqraam Rayners pulled on back for Sundowns although it was not enough to lead the South African champions to their second title.

During the game, there were a number of key match-changing decisions that referees got spot on and among the team of officials were Kenyans Yiembe and Cheruiyot, who were the assistants to Omar Artan from Somalia, who was the centre referee.

Match Officials Got Key Calls Right

The two Kenyans got their calls spot on while there were incidents that needed the intervention of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) that were also decided without controversy.

One such incident was Samy’s goal when he headed in from a freekick as he was initially adjudged to have been offside but VAR allowed the goal to stand after a lengthy review.

Meanwhile, Rayners’ goal also needed a VAR check after Namibian forward Peter Shalulile had been in an offside position when the ball came in but he was not deemed to have interfered with play.

Yiembe and Cheruiyot also flagged out other incidents on the pitch like when Aubrey Modiba of Sundowns had a physical altercation with Ahmed Atef, leading to yellow cards for the two.

CAF Champions League Final Referees Get Top Marks

“Out of 10 I’ll give them 10,” former Sundowns Manager and Head of Youth Development Academies and Scouting Departments, Walter Steenbok, told South African outlet iDiski Times of the referees’ performance.

“Because it’s not an easy game. There were lots of big decisions today and he [centre referee] took his time, and this is part of fair play – they have to take their time to check the reaction of the team, the reaction of the bench.

“But under these circumstances he did quite well. Because with $4 million as first prize, you’ve got to be spot on, and you’ve got to work as a team.

“Again, he had to listen [to his assistants], and he had to verify, especially the decision that came for the second goal of Pyramids that was a huge decision. So really out of 10, I’d give them 10.”

It was another good outing in the competition for the Nakuru-based duo who were also on duty during Sundowns’ semi-final first leg against Al Ahly in Pretoria that ended goalless before the Brazilians booked a ticket to the final on the away goals rule following a 1-1 draw in Cairo.
