The youngster is currently making waves for Zetech but she would be playing volleyball had it not been for the tactician's keen eye

If you could spot her from afar, Kenyan basketball ace Madina Okot looks like a formidable basketball player but that was not something in her mind before 2019 since she never thought she was good in the sport.

Okot started out as a volleyball player before meeting coach Philip Onyango who motivated her to switch to basketball after seeing her potential in the sport and she went on to realise her potential.

“I met with coach Onyango in August 2019 and that’s when my life changed for the better. Before that, I never thought I would play basketball. Onyango taught me the rules of the game and I decided to give it a try because it seemed easy for me," Okot told KTN Sport.

"I never expected it to pay off well for me…the first time I was called up in the national team I couldn’t participate because I was young. But now, I’m happy that I can be able to represent the country in almost all tournaments."

For Okot, getting called up to the national team was a great turning point in her career as it gave her an opportunity to play against top countries and experienced players.

“Last year (2022), I turned 18 and I got the chance to participate in international assignments. I’m lucky because I get the chance to compete with other countries and gain a lot of experience,” Okot said.

She is currently playing for Zetech Sparks at club level and she revealed that it is a great club in matters training and living like a family.

“I feel at home when I’m with my teammates we do almost everything together and that’s the essence of a team,” she said.
