Masai Russel, Tobi Amusan and Danielle Williams were among the standouts who qualified for the women's 100m hurdles final as Ackera Nugent missed out.

The women's 100m hurdles was a hotly contested one, with reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell hoping to continue her winning ways, Danielle Williams looking to defend her title and world record holder Tobi Amusan after reclaiming her title.

Ackera Nugent, the world indoor bronze medallist, and Grace Stark were also lining up for the semifinals, with the focus being on making the final later in the day.

According to World Athletics, the first two athletes to cross the finish line automatically qualify, with the two fastest non-automatic qualifiers also making the cut.

The first heat started dramatically with Finland's Lotta Harala, who was disqualified for a false start, being forced to end her campaign there.

That did not deter Grace Stark as she cruised to a comfortable victory in 12.37 seconds, ahead of Swiss Ditaji Kambudji, who came in second in an impressive 12.44 seconds.

Ackera Nugent tried to stop the two, but her efforts proved futile as she had to finish third in 12.63 seconds, forcing her to wait with fingers crossed to see if she could manage to get through as the fastest non-automatic qualifier.

World record holder Tobi Amusan, Nadine Visser, and Alaysha Johnson headlined the second heat, each looking to make the top two automatic slots.

Tobi Amusan silenced the critics, cruising to a smooth victory in 12.36 seconds ahead of Dutch woman Nadine Visser, who clocked 12.45 seconds. Pia Skrzyszowska of Poland rounded up the podium in 12.53 seconds, faster than Ackera Nugent's time in the first heat.

Alaysha Johnson had a poor start from the blocks, which dictated her race, as she went on to finish fourth in 12.66 seconds. Elena Carraro of Italy finished fifth in a personal best time of 12.79 seconds.

Masai Russell then claimed a commanding victory in the women's 100m hurdles final heat, clocking a stunning 12.42 seconds ahead of veteran Danielle Williams, who finished second in 12.44 seconds.

Devynne Charlton finished third in 12.51 seconds, with her time being the fastest non-automatic qualifier. This pushed Ackera Nugent out of the final.
