Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, has explained why he is grateful despite prematurely bowing out of the men’s 100m at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo, Japan.

Ferdinand Omanyala sneaked into the semifinal after finishing third in his heat, clocking 10.12 seconds to seal the podium.

The Commonwealth Games champion failed to advance to the final after a fifth-place finish in 10.09 seconds to end his World Athletics Championships campaign in the 100m.

Speaking after the heats, Ferdinand Omanyala revealed that he has been struggling with a hip injury that slowed down his training.

“Coming to this championship is a blessing for me because I’ve been struggling with a hip injury for the last couple of weeks, so finishing that race, I’m happy,” Ferdinand Omanyala revealed.

“Let’s say we are at 90/85% so that can do for this championship. Let’s get done with the semis first, and then we’ll see.”

What Next for Ferdinand Omanyala?

Ferdinand Omanyala added that getting as far as the semifinals was a surprise, as he expressed satisfaction towards his performance.

Omanyala added that now, he wants to make history with Kenya in the men’s 4x100m relay. Team Kenya qualified after finishing second in the repechage round at the World Athletics Relays.

He pointed out that after that, his main focus will be on working on perfecting his skills until he gets everything right.

“I’m glad we got here, and those are the results we got, so it’s about putting my head together and then moving forward, keep going,” Ferdinand Omanyala added.

“We are having the 4x100m relay coming up next weekend. I think that will be the last one, and then we refocus and keep doing it. I’ll keep working hard until I get it right.”

Ferdinand Omanyala has had a mixed season, skipping the indoor tour and beginning his season at the ASA Athletics Grand Prixes. He then raced at the 3rd National Trials in Uganda before heading to the FNB Botswana Golden Grand Prix.

Omanyala would then compete in two Diamond League Meetings, in Xiamen and Keqiao, before racing at the World Athletics Relays.

He was then in action at the Atlanta City Games, Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Kip Keino Classic, Golden Gala and the JÕHVI 2025.

Ferdinand Omanyala then competed at the Kenyan Championships, Serbia Athletics Meeting, Int. Josko Laufmeeting, Gyulai István Memorial and the Diamond League Meeting in Brussels before competing at the World Athletics Championships.
