Mary Moraa may have had a difficult 2025 campaign but she remains confident of retaining her 800m world title in Tokyo.

World 800m champion Mary Moraa has had a tough season but believes she will overcome it and retain her title in Tokyo.

Moraa is among the athletes set to defend their titles at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, which gun off in Tokyo, Japan on Saturday with her race set on the sixth day of action on September 18.

The 25-year-old has not enjoyed a brilliant campaign like the previous two years with just one win over 800m in her international races this season. That win came at Grand Slam Track in Miami in May and since then, her victories have only come from local races in Kenya.

Moraa has been to Diamond Leagues in Stockholm, Eugene and Monaco with second place in the Swedish capital her best result with the others yielding ninth and 12th places respectively.

That has erased optimism among Kenyans somewhat over her chances of retaining the 800m crown but ‘Kisii Express’ remains confident that she will be a formidable force in Tokyo.

What Gives Moraa Confidence of Winning Gold?

“I am confident and ready to go. I want to defend my title in Tokyo,” Moraa told Telecomasia.net.

“I know it is not going to be easy because we have seen the girls run really well this season, but I believe I have prepared very well for it. As Team Kenya, we have also worked very well in training and our determination is to bring those medals back home.

“We will go to Tokyo to fight for a good performance,” added Moraa, who will team up with best mate Sarah Moraa, Lilian Odira and Vivian Kiprotich for team Kenya in the 800m in Tokyo.

Moraa’s main rival remains Olympics champion Keely Hodgkinson, who floored her in Paris last year, but she is just coming back from a long-term injury which could give the Kenyan the edge.

The 800m race will begin on Thursday September 18 with the heats and Moraa will be among those hoping to make it to the final which is scheduled on the final day on Sunday September 21.
