Kenya’s Faith Cherotich can look forward to contesting the 3,000m steeplechase gold at the 2025 World Championships after making it to the final.
Faith Cherotich kept alive her hopes of winning her first-ever world title when she eased into the women’s 3,000m steeplechase final at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan on Monday.
Cherotich led the first five who sealed their tickets in Heat 1, when she won it in a time of 9:1395, finishing ahead of Kenyan-born Norah Jeruto, who now runs for Kazakhstan, while Elise Thorner of Great Britain completed the podium before being joined in the final by Flavie Renouard of France and American Lexy Halladay.
Defending champion Winfred Yavi won Heat 2 after clocking 9:15.63 ahead of Tunisian Marwa Bouzayani and Ethiopian Samba Elmayew while Gesa Krause of Germany and American Angelina Napoleon also made it through.

Former Olympics champion Peruth Chemutai won heat 3, the Ugandan clocking 9:07.68 for first place, ahead of Kenyan Doris Lemngole and Lomi Muleta of Ethiopia who were in second and third places respectively.
Leading Trio to Fight for Gold in Tokyo
German Lea Meya and Kaylee Mitchell of the United States were the others who made it to the final from Heat 3.
It was a predicted finish for the three leading contenders as Cherotich, Yavi and Chemutai are the favourites to claim the three medals on offer.

Faith Kipyegon kept her dream of a fourth world 1,500m title alive after sealing a place in the final alongside Kenyan duo Dorcas Ewoi and Nelly Chepchirchir.
The trio were on the podium at the Paris 2024 Olympics when Yavi won gold, Chemutai silver and bronze going to Cherotich but the Kenyan has shown great form this year which points to a potential changing of guard in Tokyo.
Cherotich, Yavi and Chemutai will vie for gold in the steeplechase final on Wednesday September 17.
