South African sprint sensation Bayanda Walaza has sent a defiant statement to rivals, saying they can now be considered among giants after their World Relays gold medal.

South Africa teen sensation Bayanda Walaza has fired a warning to their track rivals following their gold medal win at the World Athletics Relays Championships last weekend.

Team South Africa left fans in awe when the men’s team of Walaza, Akani Simbine, Bradley Nkoana and Sinesipho Dambile stormed to the 4x100m gold, a first for the country.

Walaza started the race, doing a great first leg, before handing the baton to Dambile who then gave it to Nkoana. Simbine then finished it off in style, running a great final stretch to catch up with his rivals and beat them at the line in brilliant fashion.

That gold medal win, coming after the team had won silver in 4x100m at the Paris Olympics, has got Walaza and his team-mates dreaming and the 19-year-old feels South Africa can now be considered giants as they are good enough and ready to compete with the very best in the world.

“It is time for us to pull up for the country, it is time to show the world that as young as we are, we are still capable of fighting against people who have been in the game for so long,” Walaza told The Inside Lane.

What is Giving Team South Africa Confidence?

Team South Africa.

“It gives us that motivation of not being scared amongst big people. It makes us look at ourselves as giants to see ourselves as one of those big guys.

“It built my confidence and made me strong so that I can also attempt each and every race that comes upon me and see myself as a winner.”

Nkoana also weighed in, saying what they achieved at the World Relays Championships is proof enough that their Olympics silver was well deserved.

“This is just us showing that what happened at the Olympics was not a fluke. We can do it again season in and out. We are here to stay, we have to stay consistent and show our capabilities everywhere, here, SA, China, everywhere, we are coming,” said Nkoana.

The South African sprinters have been in good form this year with Simbine and Walaza specifically posting great times and they are two of three sprinters to have run below 10 seconds in 2025.
