What happened to Marco Arop in the 1500m?

In the opening semifinal, Canada’s Marco Arop, the reigning world champion, demonstrated composure and control as he qualified comfortably.

Running alongside him was Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, who matched him stride for stride, with both men clocking 1:45.09. The pair advanced automatically, leaving Ireland’s Mark English in third place with 1:45.47, which was not enough to progress.

Arop, who won gold at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, is widely regarded as the man to beat, but Sedjati has consistently shown he has the pace and tactical sharpness to challenge him on the global stage.

McPhillips Sparks Heat Two With National Record

The second semifinal brought the fireworks. Ireland’s Cian McPhillips produced the race of his life, storming to victory in a national record of 1:43.18. He edged Britain’s Max Burgin, who also impressed with 1:43.37 to book his place in the final.

Former world champion Donavan Brazier of the United States returned to the global stage with a strong showing, finishing third in 1:43.82. Although outside the automatic spots, the time was fast enough to secure qualification as one of the two fastest losers.

The heat underlined the remarkable depth in the 800m event, with three men dipping under 1:44 in a semifinal.

Wanyonyi and Attaoui Advance in Fierce Final Heat

The last semifinal was equally gripping, with Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui taking victory in 1:43.18, just ahead of Kenya’s teenage sensation Emmanuel Wanyonyi in 1:43.47. Jamaica’s Navasky Anderson also wrote his name into history, breaking his country’s national record with a 1:43.72 to claim the final qualifying spot.

The result means the eight-man final will feature: Arop (Canada), Sedjati (Algeria), McPhillips (Ireland), Burgin (Great Britain), Attaoui (Spain), Wanyonyi (Kenya), Anderson (Jamaica), and Brazier (USA).

With established champions facing off against rising names, the men’s 800m final promises to be one of the highlights of the Tokyo World Championships.
