Sharon Lokedi has shed light on how she plans to beat strong competition at Boston Marathon where she is up against a very strong field that includes champion Hellen Obiri.

Kenya’s Sharon Lokedi is looking forward to an epic battle at the Boston Marathon where she hopes being patient will lead her to success.

The 2025 Boston Marathon takes place on Monday April 21, with one of the strongest fields ever assembled set to feature, including defending champion Hellen Obiri, who is looking for a third title on the bounce, veteran Ednah Kiplagat, Sharon Cherop, as well as Ethiopians Amane Beriso and Yalemzerf Yehualaw among others.

With that, Lokedi, who finished second after running Obiri close last year, knows her work is cut out and has revealed what is giving her hope of going one better this time round.

“To be honest, this year’s field is a very tough one with very good quality competitors all round,” Lokedi told Telecomasia.net.

“There are many women on the field with good times. But the plan is to be patient and keep with the leading group for as long as possible and be very competitive.

“But, I am looking forward to doing better than last year and the best tactic is to be aware of when to make a move.”

Indeed, Lokedi will need to be aware when to make the move as it is failure to execute this tactic effectively that saw her miss out on the 2024 title, having stayed with Obiri for most of the race, but ran out of steam in the final stretch.

It will be the fourth time Lokedi and Obiri will be locking horns after three epic battles in over one year at New York in 2024, Boston last year and Paris 2024 Olympics and she admits her Kenyan compatriot brings out the best in her.

“I really like competing against her [Obiri] because she puts the hammer down and that is what I like,” added the 2022 New York Marathon champion.

“She brings the best out of me and is a motivation to keep working. I believe I have prepared well on my end despite training through winter. I still managed to put in some good work and get the best out of myself on race day,” said Us-based Lokedi, who has been training in Arizona.

Obiri is bidding to become just the second woman to win the Boston Marathon three times in a row since Fatuma Roba’s heroics from 1997-1999.
