Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has officially made his long-awaited return to competitive football, ending a five-month spell on the sidelines.
The 32-year-old Kenyan striker featured for his new club, Al Arabi, during their Qatar Stars League season opener against Shamal at the Grand Hamad Stadium in Doha on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Introduced in the 74th minute of the thrilling 2-2 draw, the match marked his first official competitive action since mid-March.
Taking to social media shortly after his comeback, the former Al Duhail forward expressed profound gratitude for navigating the gruelling recovery process.
He reflected on the long road back with an inspiring message to his supporters, writing that he spent five months of waiting, working, and recovering, feeling blessed to be back doing what he loves.
He added that while the journey was long, God's timing is always perfect, and concluded that it felt great to be back on the pitch.

Michael Olunga: The Long Road to Recovery
Michael Olunga’s injury ordeal began on March 13, 2026, when a severe pelvic issue forced him off the field. The severity of the damage quickly became clear, and on April 2, the clinical finisher underwent successful surgery in Paris, France.
The procedure effectively ruled him out for the remainder of the 2025/2026 campaign, forcing him into an extensive offseason program of physical therapy and specialised conditioning to repair the damage.
Michael Olunga remained dedicated to his recovery throughout the dark days of rehabilitation. His hard work began to pay off late last month when he rejoined Al Arabi’s pre-season training camp in Marbella, Spain.
Participating in high-intensity drills in Europe signalled that his return to first-team action was finally imminent, paving the way for his appearance on Friday night in Doha.
Michael Olunga: A Massive Boost for Club and Country
Having their star striker back at full fitness provides an immediate tactical lift for both Al Arabi and Harambee Stars.
For his club side, Michael Olunga brings proven target-man presence, physical dominance, and elite penalty-box movement to the attack as they chase domestic honours this season.
For the Harambee Stars, his return brings much-needed relief ahead of upcoming international assignments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
While his playing time will likely be managed carefully over the coming weeks as he builds up his match sharpness, his 16-minute cameo in Doha proved that Kenya's premier forward is officially back and ready to lead the line once again.
