Kenyan cross-country guru Lucy Mawia has been provisionally suspended by the Italian Federation following a positive doping test.

Kenya’s Lucy Mawia Muli has been provisionally suspended by the Italian Anti-doping tribunal following a violation of an anti-doping rule.

As per the Italian anti-doping agency, Mawia’s sample was found positive for the presence of Efedrina, Oxycodone, and its metabolite Oxymorphone. The substance is an active metabolite of oxycodone produced via CYP2D6-mediated metabolism.

The post read: “The National Anti-Doping Tribunal, accepting the instance proposed by the National Anti-Doping Prosecutor's Office, has provisionally suspended the athlete Lucy Mawia Muli (FIDAL member) for the violation of articles 2.1 e 2.2 (substance detected: EFEDRINA, OXYCODONE AND ITS METABOLITE OXYMORPHONE). The test was carried out by NADO Italia.”

Meanwhile, Mawia has been a strong cross-country runner, and eyebrows were raised when she missed out on the World Cross Country Championships national trials held at the Prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru.

Mawia won the 2022 World Cross Country Tour and kicked off the 2023 cross-country campaign with a third-place finish in Amorebieta and sixth place in Atapuerca.

In 2022, Mawia dominated the races at the start of the tour, winning in Bydgoszcz in October and in Soria and Alcobendas in November. She was also third in Atapuerca in November and second in San Vittore Olona in January in 2023.

This year, she was in action at the 5km Route de Lille, where she finished sixth and proceeded to the Italian Cross Country Championships as an out-of-competition participant.
