Australian Lachlan Kennedy was the surprise name that beat Ferdinand Omanyala and Bayanda Walaza at Kip Keino Classic and here is everything you need to know about him.

Australian sprinter Lachlan Kennedy was the surprise winner of the 100m at Kip Keino Classic at Ulinzi Complex in Nairobi on Saturday.

Kennedy clocked a personal best of 9.98 seconds to win the race ahead of South Africa’s teen sensation Bayanda Walaza, who timed 10.3 seconds, and Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, the African record holder, who clocked 10.07 seconds.

With his time, the 21-year-old became just the second Australian to clock a sub-10 since Patrick Johnson's 9.93 Australian record in 2003.

However, Lachlan Kennedy is unknown to many fans with his win thrusting him into the spotlight but who is the Australian sprinter?

Unbeknown to many, Lachlan Kennedy first fell in love with rugby before athletics, playing for Brisbane junior rugby union as well as junior international rugby union for Australia before switching sports.

The sprinter has had to overcome some personal challenges as he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2018.

Lachlan Kennedy has represented Australia at both junior and senior levels, having featured for his country at the 2022 and 2024 World U20 Championships.

He was part of the team that broke the 4x100m relay U20 record after clocking 39.30 seconds, while he won silver in 100m at the 2023 Pacific Games.

Lachlan Kennedy also represented Australia at the Paris 2024 Olympics Games as part of their 4x100m relay team that went on to set a new Oceania record of 38.12 seconds.

The sprinter has come of age in 2025 when he has set a number of records both indoor and outdoor. He equaled the Australian record for 60m, running a time of 6.52 seconds in January, and set a new 100m personal best the same month, after running 10.17 seconds into a -1.0 m/s wind.

He improved it to 10.03 seconds (+1.1) in March before then running 10.00 seconds during the heats of the Australian Athletics Championships in Perth in April.

Lachlan Kennedy made a bold statement at the 2025 World Indoor Championships when he claimed a silver medal in the 60m dash, having clocked 6.50 seconds, one hundredth of a second behind Britain’s Jeremiah Azuh, who won the race.

South Africa’s Akani Simbine was third as he won bronze in 6.54 seconds and given the form the 31-year-old is currently in, the weight of that achievement is now being felt.

Omanyala, Walaza and Simbine are just not the big names that have been floored by Lachlan Kennedy this year as he has also beaten Gout Gout, who is seen as the biggest sprint prospect in Australia and the world.

In March, he won the 200m race at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne ahead of compatriot Gout Gout, running a personal best 20.26 seconds.

The 21-year-old has already hit the 100m qualifying mark for the 2025 World Championships while he was also part of Team Australia that made it to the global event in 4x100m relay after sealing their tickets at the 2025 World Relays in Guangzhou, China in May.

His win in Nairobi is therefore a continuation of his great season and Australians will be hoping to see him fly the flag higher at the Worlds in Tokyo, Japan in September.
