'He Is the Reason I'm Here' - Bayanda Walaza Pays Emotional Tribute to Ferdinand Omanyala

Bayanda Walaza has expressed deep admiration for Ferdinand Omanyala, crediting him as the inspiration behind his sprinting career.

Bayanda Walaza has opened up about why he will always feel indebted to Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala.

The double world under-20 champion feels a deep sense of gratitude to Ferdinand Omanyala as he opened up about why competing against him in any type of setup is an honour.

Ferdinand Omanyala and Bayanda Walaza first clashed at the sixth edition of the Kip Keino Classic, where Walaza came in second (10.03 seconds) ahead of Omanyala (10.07 seconds), who rounded up the podium. Lachlan Kennedy won the race as he clocked a personal best time of 9.98 seconds.

After the race, Bayanda Walaza spoke highly of Ferdinand Omanyala, revealing the impact he has had on sprinters, not only in Kenya but the whole of Africa.

Bayanda Walaza pointed out that Ferdinand Omanyala inspired his career, and it is because of the reigning Commonwealth Games champion that he has been able to rise.

Walaza added that he had always dreamt about competing against Ferdinand Omanyala, and the Kip Keino Classic made that dream come true.

“It’s truly an honour to race against Ferdinand Omanyala…it’s one thing that every athlete wants to do, race against the pros,” Bayanda Walaza revealed.

“I give Ferdinand Omanyala his flowers, and I’m going to tell him every now and then, he is the reason why I’m here.

“He inspired a lot of us, you know, not just Kenyans but all-around Africa. He has been a role model to everyone. I truly feel honoured racing with him.”

Thanks to Ferdinand Omanyala, Bayanda Walaza has grown into one of the most talented youngsters in Africa.

In 2025 alone, Bayanda Walaza has made headlines in a series of high-profile races. He set the world lead in the men’s 100m at the AGN U16, U18, U20, and Seniors Track & Field Championship, clocking 9.99 seconds before Akani Simbine obliterated it with his 9.90 seconds at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix.

Bayanda Walaza was also a star at the World Athletics Relays, where South Africa claimed the win in the men’s 4x100m relay, anchored by Akani Simbine.

Bayanda Walaza also clocked a stunning personal best time of 9.94 seconds to win the men’s 100m at the 75. Boris Hanžeković Memorial before his most recent competition at the Racers Grand Prix against Kishane Thompson, Oblique Seville and Co, where he finished fourth.
