The women's category features a stellar field of athletes who have achieved global titles and world-leading performances.

Faith Kipyegon and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone headline the women’s squad, following their impressive campaigns at the World Athletics Championships, among other events.

Faith Kipyegon, inarguably, the queen of the middle distance, successfully defended her World 1500m title and also earned a silver medal in the 5000m. Her exceptional year also included breaking the world record in the 1500m.

On her part, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone excelled across the board, becoming the World Champion in both the 400m and the 4x400m relay.

She also remained undefeated in both the 400m and 400m hurdles events, notably running the second-fastest 400m of all time.

Femke Bol has also been nominated following her impressive season that saw her claim the World and Diamond League 400m hurdles titles.

The Dutch star also maintained an impressive undefeated streak in the event throughout the season, registering the three fastest times of the year.

Beatrice Chebet, a dominant force in distance running, secured a formidable double by winning both the World 5000m and 10,000m titles. Her season was further cemented by a world record performance in the 5000m.

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, who has also made the cut, proved her versatility by claiming three World Championship titles in the 100m, 200m, and the 4x100m relay. She was also undefeated in the 100m, clocking the top five performances globally for the year.

The men's category is equally competitive, showcasing global champions from various disciplines. Rai Benjamin has made the list after claiming the world 400m hurdles title.

His season was also marked by consistency at the top level, as he produced two of the three fastest 400m hurdles times recorded during the year.

Jimmy Gressier has also been a standout in long-distance events, winning the World 10,000m title and a 5000m bronze medal. He also added the Diamond League title in the 3000m to his honours.

Noah Lyles, a double World Champion, secured gold in the 200m and the 4x100m relay, adding a bronze in the 100m. He remained unbeaten in the 200m, capping his season with the Diamond League title.

Cordell Tinch, the premier 110m hurdles specialist of the year, captured both the World and Diamond League titles in his event. Four of the top six global performances in the 110m hurdles were credited to him.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi, still a young talent, dominated the 800m, winning both the World and Diamond League championships. He was a consistent top performer, running four of the season's top six times in the 800m.

Voting and Timeline

The initial vote to determine the two finalists for both the Women’s and Men’s Track Athlete of the Year awards is currently open to the public on the World Athletics social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and X.

This voting period is set to conclude on October 19. Following this, the federation will continue to unveil its nominations for other major accolades.

The nominees for the Field Athlete of the Year awards are scheduled to be announced on October 20, with the Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year nominees to follow on October 27.

The ultimate World Athlete of the Year, for both the women's and men's divisions, will be selected from the eventual winners of the three distinct categories: Track Athlete of the Year, Field Athlete of the Year, and Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year.

This multi-stage process ensures that all disciplines are recognised before the overall top athlete is crowned at the World Athletics Awards gala later in the year.
