Peres Jepchirchir is unsure of competing in Sunday's New York City Marathon due to a calf injury she encountered during training.

Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir is uncertain about making her second appearance at the New York City Marathon scheduled for Sunday, November 5.

Speaking on the sidelines after the pre-race press conference, Jepchirchir noted that during her final sessions of training, she encountered a calf injury that may derail her.

However, she noted that she had trained well for the marathon, and if all goes well, she will be on the start line on Sunday.

“I was back from injury…I was strong. The way you saw I ran the Great North Run and the World Half Marathon, and I was looking comfortable.

"I was fit and was really prepared for this year’s race but in bad luck, as I was doing my last training on Saturday, I got a calf pool.

"However, all in all, I’m still happy and on Sunday I will see if I will run if all goes well…I’m not sure though,” Jepchirchir said.

The 2021 New York City Marathon champion explained that she is aware of the strong field but she is ready to fight for the prize.

“I know the field is strong and the ladies are also strong and for me competition is competition,” the 2022 Boston Marathon champion said.

The women’s field has attracted strong women including reigning Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri, former world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei, and Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia who will be running her second marathon.
