Brian Komen has yet again upset Abel Kipsang in the men's 1500m to take the top honours at the African Games.

Brian Komen stunned fans at the Legon Sports Stadium to upset Africa 1500m champion Abel Kipsang and take the top prize in the 1500m at the African Games in Accra, Ghana.

Komen stopped the clock in 3:39.19 ahead of Ethiopian Girma Shire who finished second in 3:39.40. Kipsang completed the podium in 3:39.45.

Komen was in a class of his own at the African Games national trials, beating Kipsang to second place and he yet again disappointed his compatriot at the continental showpiece.

The women’s 1500m saw Mero Hirut of Ethiopia take top honours in 4:05.71 as her fellow Ethiopian Abera Kumsa finished second in 4:06.09. Kenya’s Mary Ekiru sealed the podium in 4:06.22.

Another Kenyan in the race, Lydia Lagat faded to finish seventh after crossing the finish line in a time of 4:14.14.

Meanwhile, Cornelius Kemboi completed the podium in the 5000m, finishing behind Ethiopia’s Gebrhiwet Berhe and Somalia’s Abdallahi Jama. Berhe cut the tape in 13:38.12 to win the race ahead of Ethiopian Jama who clocked 13:38.64 for a second-place finish. Kemboi completed the podium in 13:40.61.

Earlier in the day, Nancy Jepleting finished third in a time of 1:15:07 in the half marathon. Loliha Atalena of South Sudan took top honours in the race, clocking 1:14:36 to cross the finish line. Ethiopia’s Aderaw Gelaw finished second in a time of 1:14:40.

The men’s half marathon saw the first Kenyan to cross the finish line Panuel Mkungo cross the finish sixth in a time of 1:06:30.
