Boston Marathon: Champions John Korir, Sharon Lokedi Return

The return of reigning champions John Korir and Sharon Lokedi comes as no surprise. John Korir has become a familiar face in Boston, competing in the last three editions.

His journey has seen a steady climb, from a ninth-place finish in 2023 to fourth in 2024, culminating in a spectacular victory in 2025.

His winning time of 2:04:45 was the second-fastest in the race's history. The Kenyan is in formidable form, having recently set a personal best of 2:02:24 to win the Valencia Marathon.

“Last year’s race was a very meaningful win for me and my family, and I look forward to coming back to Boston again,” Korir told the organisers. “I aim to finish first and run fast again in April.”

Sharon Lokedi, known for her prowess in unpaced races, will be making her third consecutive appearance. After a runner-up finish in 2024, she delivered a dominant performance in 2025, shattering the course record with a time of 2:17:22. Her run eclipsed Buzunesh Deba’s previous record of 2:19:59, which had stood since 2014.

“Boston in 2025 was beyond expectations. Breaking the course record, earning a victory, and racing against some of the best women in the world made 2025’s race a career highlight,” Sharon Lokedi told the organisers. “We’re already training hard to run it back in 2026.”

On his part, Conner Mantz is set to return to Boston following a sensational 2025 season. The 29-year-old started the year by setting a new American record of 59:17 at the Houston Half Marathon and capped it off by breaking the American marathon record with a 2:04:43 finish in Chicago.

In between, Corner Mantz ran 2:05:08 in Boston, the second-fastest time ever by an American on the course, trailing only Ryan Hall's 2:04:58 from 2011.

Corner Mantz hopes 2026 will be the year he breaks into the top three at a major marathon, a feat no American man has achieved since Galen Rupp's second-place finish in Chicago four years prior.

Emily Sisson, the American women's record holder, will also be a top contender. Sisson, 34, set her record of 2:18:29 when she finished second at the 2022 Chicago Marathon. While she has not placed higher than seventh in a major since then, her experience and record-holding status make her a formidable presence.

Her most recent major was an eighth-place finish at the New York City Marathon in November, where she clocked 2:25:05.

The Boston Athletic Association is expected to announce the full professional field for the 2026 race in January.
