Award-winning American rapper Lil Nas X has caught the eye of fans after wearing fashionable sneakers costing about Ksh 22,000 to run Sunday's New York City Half Marathon.

American rapper Lil Nas X was among more than the 25,000 runners at the New York City Half Marathon and one thing that caught the eye of his fans was the sneakers he won to compete.

The 24-year-old clocked 2:32:53 to cross the finish line running in some less-than-ideal footwear for the occasion. He was wearing a pair of Coach’s Distressed High Top Sneakers, himself a brand ambassador for the fashion house.

As per Pages Six, the white pair of shoes is currently sold out on the brand’s website; however, the shoes are available on Amazon for $162.25, approximately Ksh 22,000.

As per the New York Times, Lil Nas X was accompanied by Roberto Mandje, New York Road Runners’ senior adviser for running engagement and coaching.

“We would be running and you’d hear someone shout, ‘Wait, was that Lil Nas X?’ So, he’d turn around and wave, and they’d freak out,” Mandje said.

His appearance in the race was intended to be on the low and the rapper even entered the race using his real name, Montero Hill. He also seemed determined to get the full experience, going so far as to visit the pre-race expo in person on Saturday to grab his race bib (No. 2271) and a commemorative long-sleeve T-shirt.

He was wearing the shirt when he met up with Mr. Mandje on Sunday at 6:30 a.m. and he did a quick assessment of whether he had been training, to which Lil Nas X had not.

Mandje also found out that he did have a goal to finish and he certainly did want someone to chat with during the race and above all, he wanted to enjoy the experience.
