Athletics Kenya director of competitions, Paul Mutwii, noted that only the top two athletes to cross the finish line in every event will have made the cut to the World Championships.

Invited athletes must confirm their participation and collect their bib numbers in person on July 21.

Mutwii emphasised that the final selection of the third athlete, where applicable, and decisions regarding athletes competing in multiple events, will be made by a selection panel.

Athletes who qualify at the trials will only be considered if they meet the qualifying standards within the designated window, which closes on August 24. The marathon qualifying window closed on May 25.

However, Paul Mutwii noted that Athletics Kenya has invited athletes close to achieving the qualifying standard and well-placed in the world rankings

Selection of a Marathon Team

Eliud Kipchoge is the only man to run a marathon under two hours.

He pointed out that a provisional marathon team of seven men and seven women has also been selected, pending final approval and clearance from the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

Paul Mutwii, is expected to meet with the marathoners, their coaches, and managers to finalise the team and address any AIU requirements. The technical panel will select the top three athletes in each category, plus a reserve.

“The selection of the third athlete, where necessary, and the decision as to who gets to compete in more than one race will be made by the panel of selectors,” Mutwii confirmed.

“In the past, we have named teams before consulting them, only for them to withdraw at the last minute. We want a commitment from them and clearance from AIU on their doping status.”

Meanwhile, World champions Faith Kipyegon (1,500m and 5,000m), Mary Moraa (800m), and Emmanuel Wanyonyi (800m silver medallist) have been granted exemptions from the trials. Ferdinand Omanyala also confirmed that he will not be competing at the trials.

The women’s 5,000m and men’s 10,000m teams were selected during the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon.

The women's 5,000m team includes Beatrice Chebet, Agnes Ng’etich, and Margaret Akidor, with the possibility of Faith Kipyegon joining if she chooses to compete in both events. The men’s 10,000m team comprises Edwin Kurgat, Ismael Kipkirui, and Benson Kiplagat.
