The national junior team head coach Robert Ngisirei has said preparations for the Africa Under-18 and 20 Championships are on course as they look to scout for talents in schools.
The event is set to be staged in Lusaka, Zambia from April 29 to May 3. Ngisirei told Pulse Sports that at the moment, Athletics Kenya is partnering with schools to monitor the promising athletes ahead of the trials which are to be held on March 24 and 25 at the Nyayo Stadium.
“At the moment, things are flowing seamlessly. So far, we haven’t encountered any challenges. We are working closely with schools because that is where we shall get most of our athletes for the championship,” Ngisirei said.
He added that preparations for the event have to be taken with utmost seriousness because it is the only major event the juniors have lined up.
Ngisirei also noted that competing against some of the best athletes across Africa will not be an easy task but AK will ensure the athletes are well-prepared for the battle.
“This is the only major event for the juniors this year and I know it’s going to be tough. After the trials, we shall organise a residential training camp for the selected team,” he said.
The veteran coach also warned that the federation shall be very strict when it comes to age. “We shall release a detailed structure of the rules that have to be followed by the athletes who wish to participate next week,” he added.
