CAF has cleared referee Jean-Jacques Ndala of any wrongdoing during the AFCON 2025 final, disagreeing with those who questioned the level of officiating such as Thierry Henry.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appeared to disagree with sentiments from fans and observers that officiating was a problem at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Referees came under fire at AFCON 2025 when various teams complained about decisions made during matches with fans also pointing a finger of blame at match officials.

Things came to a head during the final, pitting host nation Morocco against Senegal, when the Teranga Lions scored a late goal but was ruled out for a foul in the build-up which some thought was soft.

Morocco would be awarded a penalty moments later following a foul on Brahim Diaz, which others also felt the player went down easily, and it led to a standoff as Senegal players protested and even walked off the pitch, threatening to scuttle the big game.

While the game continued and Diaz missed the penalty, taking the game into extra time, where Senegal won, officiating during the tournament has dominated conversations and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is among those who were not impressed.

"Watching the AFCON for a very long time, the referees are not at the level of the show. All the stuff that happens in those tournaments sometimes are made because of referee mistakes," Henry stated on CBS Golazo.

"I’m not blaming the referee; I’m blaming the people that are not training them to be at the level of the football that we’re watching, and that’s about it. Other than that, like I said so many times, it was a great tournament."

However, while handing fines to Senegal and Morocco as well as its players for the chaos witnessed during the final, CAF cleared referee Jean-Jacques Ndala of any wrongdoing, having found no irregularities in his decisions.

CAF was impressed by the quality of refereeing from the Congolese match official, saying all on-pitch decisions adhered to the rules, disagreeing with Henry and others who felt the level of officiating did not meet the standards.

Ndala is among the top-rated African referees and is set to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
