Mozambique have introduced a generous bonus structure to motivate the Mambas as they aim for a historic breakthrough at AFCON 2025.

Mozambique's national team, the Mambas, have been promised significant financial rewards if they can achieve an unprecedented victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

While historically not considered contenders, a substantial bonus package has been put in place to motivate the squad to excel in Morocco.

The Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) has confirmed a lucrative incentive scheme for the players and the coach.

FMF President Feizal Sidat revealed the details of the performance-based rewards in an exclusive interview.

"We discussed with the team, and everything is done," Sidat told Pan African Football. "They know how much they will get. If they can win AFCON, they will get 1.5 million meticais each."

This figure translates to approximately $23,000 per player for winning the tournament. Feizal Sidat clarified that the head coach is also included in this bonus structure.

The federation has also established a tiered payment system, with smaller bonuses for reaching earlier knockout stages.

"If they can go to the quarterfinals and semifinals, it will be less," he added, confirming that the rewards scale down for lesser achievements.

In addition to the performance bonuses, each player has already received a significant allowance for their participation.

"For pocket money, we gave each player around $4,000 for the whole tournament," Sidat confirmed.

Despite the financial motivation, the FMF president acknowledged the immense challenge facing the team. Mozambique is in a difficult group alongside Gabon, former champions Cameroon, and the reigning titleholders, the Ivory Coast, whom they face in their opening match.

"All 24 teams are equal, but we are in a very tough group," Sidat admitted. "If we go past the quarterfinals, for us it will be very good. We all know the quality. Apart from Cabo Verde, eight teams that qualified for the World Cup are in Morocco."

He concluded, "We are trying our best because today, in football, everything is equal."

The Mambas' squad, led by coach Chiquinho Conde, features a mix of experienced players, including Premier League star Reinildo Mandava of Sunderland and Sporting CP's Geny Catamo. However, their preparations hit a snag with a 4-1 friendly loss to Angola ahead of the tournament.
