Rooney snubs Haaland for African excellence: Ghana’s Semenyo, Mbeumo named in Premier League top 3 players this season
Wayne Rooney has surprised fans by naming Ghana’s Antoine Semenyo and Bryan Mbeumo among his top three Premier League players this season, with Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres chosen ahead of Erling Haaland .
In an interview with Prime Video, the Manchester United legend praised Semenyo’s consistent performances for Bournemouth, saying, “I think he’s been brilliant for Bournemouth, carrying on his form from last season.”
Semenyo, 25, has scored six goals and provided three assists in 11 appearances this season as the Cherries sit ninth on the table.
Rooney also singled out Mbeumo for his contributions at Manchester United, stating, “I’d put Mbeumo there.”
“I think he’s been very good for Man United even after a difficult start this season for the club. I think he’s been really good.”
Mbeumo, who joined the Red Devils from Brentford in the summer, has netted five goals and added one assist in 11 games, helping United to seventh place in the league.
Completing his top three, Rooney selected Gyokeres, highlighting the Swede’s work rate, hold-up play, and goal-scoring ability.
“Arsenal have been crying out for a number nine for a few years now and he’s come in and his work rate, determination, hold up play, and scoring a few goals as well,” Rooney said. Gyokeres has scored four goals in 10 Premier League appearances so far.
Rooney concluded, “I’d say that’s my top three,” leaving some fans surprised by the absence of more widely recognised stars, including Erling Haaland, who has fired 14 goals and one assist in 11 games for Manchester City.
This recognition signals the growing impact of African talent in the Premier League, with both Semenyo and Mbeumo making significant strides at their respective clubs this season.
