PSG signs goalkeeper to challenge Donnarumma after FIFA Club World Cup disappointment

Paris Saint-Germain has reached an agreement to sign goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille, a move seen as a direct challenge to current number one Gianluigi Donnarumma following PSG’s disappointing defeat at the FIFA Club World Cup final. 

After two initial offers were rejected, PSG increased their bid to just over €40 million, excluding bonuses, which secured the transfer of the 23-year-old French shot-stopper.

Chevalier is set to sign a five-year contract with PSG and has already been given permission to travel to Paris to undergo medical tests and finalize the deal per Fabrizio Romano. 

The club aims to have him available for the UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham next Wednesday in Udine.

Last season, Chevalier recorded 13 clean sheets in 48 appearances for Lille, conceding 53 goals, and established himself as one of Europe's top young goalkeepers. His performances earned him a nomination for the prestigious Yashin Trophy, awarded to the best goalkeeper globally.

The signing will increase competition in PSG's goalkeeping department, especially with Renato Marin recently signed as a free agent from Roma. 

Meanwhile, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s future remains uncertain as contract renewal discussions stall. Other goalkeepers in the squad include Arnau Tenas and Matvey Safonov.

PSG manager Luis Enrique has assured Chevalier of a starting role regardless of the ongoing situation with Donnarumma. This strategic signing underscores PSG’s intent to strengthen their squad depth and resilience in goal after the recent Club World Cup disappointment.
