‘It’s a shame’ - Frustrated Nigerian giant slams Turkish Lig after disallowed goal in controversial Fenerbahce defeat
Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu has expressed his fury at the Turkish Super Lig after his goal was controversially disallowed in Trabzonspor’s tense 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahce on Sunday.
Onuachu, who recently sealed a permanent move back to Trabzonspor, appeared to have put the visitors ahead with a thunderous header in the 11th minute.
Rising above Fenerbahce defender Milan Skriniar, he powered the ball into the top right corner, sending fans into celebration in a match that witnessed a masterclass from new signing Andre Onana.
However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was controversially ruled out for a foul. The decision sparked immediate protests from Onuachu, who vehemently argued with the officials and ended up receiving a yellow card for his reaction.
The game escalated further after Trabzonspor’s Okay Yokuşlu was shown a red card later in the first half, leaving the team a man down.
Fenerbahce’s Moroccan striker Youssef En-Nesyri fired the hosts ahead just before halftime, and that goal proved to be the difference as the match ended 1-0.
Onuachu was visibly frustrated after the match when approached by the media. In a video circulating on social media, he condemned the refereeing and VAR decisions, branding the situation “a shame.”
He declared: “It’s a shame, the whole board will see this. It’s a big shame on the Turkish League. It’s a big shame, you have to do better.”
His blow was a huge setback for Trabzonspor, who had looked poised to take the lead before the disallowed goal.
The striker’s outspoken comments highlight ongoing concerns regarding officiating standards in the Turkish Super Lig, and his plea for improvement has resonated with fans and pundits.
