Michael Olunga: Seychelles Match Gives Harambee Stars Captain Perfect Opportunity to Make History
As Kenya welcomes Seychelles in their latest installment of World Cup qualifiers in Nairobi on Tuesday, history beckons for Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga.
Benni McCarthy’s men are looking to bounce back from their surprising 3-1 home loss to The Gambia on Friday and the match against Seychelles provides them with a chance to do that given the island nation have been the whipping boys of Group F.
Seychelles are winless in the group with two goals scored and 34 conceded from seven matches and five of them came from Harambee Stars when the two teams last met in November 2023.

Who is Ahead of Olunga on the Scorer’s Charts?
During that contest, Olunga scored two goals and would have managed up to four, were it not for some shocking misses, but now is the chance to right those wrongs.
For Olunga, the match presents an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. The first one is to help Kenya get back to winning ways while the second is to make history with Harambee Stars.
This is because the Al-Arabi striker is just four goals way from becoming Kenya’s all-time top scorer and three from tying with William Ouma, who currently leads the scoring charts for the country.
Ouma, the former Luo Union and Gor Mahia striker, managed 35 goals for Kenya in 66 matches to become the all-time top scorer with Dennis Oliech second on 34 while AFC Leopards legend Elijah Lidonde scored 33.
Hat-Trick or More Would Complete the Job
Olunga is fourth on the list with 32 from 65 matches but playing against the African minnows could see him surpass all the others, if he is prolific enough.
The 31-year-old had opportunities on Friday but was not lucky to burry any of them but he can expect a less tedious match against Seychelles, who have been conceding three of more goals in their 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
It means Olunga could score two or more on Tuesday to move him up the charts while a hat-trick or more would see him end the day either as Kenya’s joint top scorer or the all-time best.
That will perhaps add an extra bit of pressure, or motivation for the former Gor Mahia and Tusker forward.
