Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards are set to face off in the 98th Mashemeji Derby at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, 7th December from 3.00 PM after being moved from 29th November.

For the first time since 2023 Kenya's most anticipated football clash was set to be held Saturday due to preparations for World Aids day on Monday, December 1, with the celebrations set to be held at the stadium, but the fixture has been moved a week later to 7th.

Historically, the derby has otherwise tended to be held on a Sunday, most times at the iconic Nyayo Stadium, but extenuating circumstances have enforced the change.

The stakes are incredibly high for both sides, who are coming off disappointing last results. Gor Mahia were shocked 4-1 by APS Bomet on Wednesday, while Leopards, who sit third, 14 points behind the league leaders K’Ogalo with a game in hand, are coming off a three game winless run.

The last encounter between the two giants last June in Homabay ended in a 1-1 draw. Gor Mahia boss Charles Akonnor knows he cannot afford another blip or risk the wrath of the club’s fans, while AFC Leopards boss Fred Ambani will be itching to keep his unbeaten individual record in Mashemeji Derbies intact.

What's at Stake?

Beyond the customary bragging rights and three points, the derby is a must-win for both sides, who are in the hunt for the league title this season with plenty still to play for.

The game could not be held at Kasarani Stadium due to Nairobi United's CAF Confederation Cup group stage match, which is scheduled on Sunday, November 30.

Nairobi United will be up against AS Maniema Union from the Democratic Republic of Congo. They have already kick-started their group stage campaign with a 3-0 loss to Wydad AC in a match played in Casablanca, Morocco, on Sunday, November 23.

Making their debut in the continental group stages, Nairobi United will be eager to secure their first group stage win. However, the match will not be a walk in the park since AS Maniema are fresh from stunning Azam FC 2-0.
