Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has received a shot in the arm after announcing a sponsorship deal worth Ksh1.12 billion that will run for 10 years.

FKF unveiled gaming firm SportPesa as the new FKF Premier League title sponsors after signing a 10-year partnership that sees the company make a return, having been the league’s main benefactor from 2014 to 2019.

From the Ksh1.12 billion deal, FKF will receive an annual average amount of Ksh112 million but Ksh85 million has been allocated for the 2025-26 season.

According to sportpesa.com, 60 per cent of the amount will go to clubs in form of grants while 40 per cent will cater for administrative and operational costs.

That therefore means that next season, all the 18 clubs will share Ksh51 million, which is their allocation from the Ksh85 million, translating to Ksh2.8 for each of them.

Going forward, if the annual grant of Ksh112 million is maintained, then the 60 per cent going to clubs will be a total of Ksh67.2 million which means each of the 18 top flight teams will pocket Ksh3.7 million per season.

However, there is a proposal to reduce the number of top flight teams from 18 to 16 starting in the 2026-27 season and if this is approved as widely expected, each of the teams will receive Ksh4.2 million from the SportPesa deal.

However, the Kenyan deal pales in comparison to neighbouring Tanzania, whose league has a five-year partnership with National Bank of Commerce (NBC) worth Tsh32.6 billion (Ksh1.64 billion) signed in 2023.

From the Tanzania deal, clubs receive 67 per cent of the amount in grants with the rest going to administrative expenses.

That means the Tanzanian League organisers receive Tsh6.52 billion (Ksh327,549,766) per year, with the 67 per cent being Ksh219,458,343 and that sees each of the 18 clubs pocket Ksh12.19 million per year.

However, the standards of the Tanzanian league have remarkably improved, making it more lucrative and expensive for sponsors, as witnessed with their two top clubs Yanga and Simba, who bring in the most revenue.

Yanga have been receiving Tsh4 billion (about Ksh200 million) per year from SportPesa from a three-year deal worth Tsh12.33 billion (Ksh619 million) deal signed in 2022, while rivals Simba have just sealed a three-year partnership with another betting company Betway worth Tsh20 billion (Ksh1 billion) that will see them bank around Ksh335 million per year.
