He has not done it fantastically — Van Gaal tells Man United to do about Ten Hag

Dutch tactician Louis Van Gaal believes Erik ten Hag should keep his job as he needs more time to transmit his ideas; however, he admitted that his compatriot has been far from fantastic

The former Utrecht manager is in a similar situation as Van Gaal was eight seasons ago. Van Gaal was hired as Manchester United’s manager at the start of the 14/15 season, taking over from the failed inheritor David Moyes. However, he was sacked at the end of his second season at the club, despite leading them to FA Cup glory. 

Results in other competitions did not match those in the FA Cup, as Manchester United finished outside of the top four, costing the 1995 Champions League winner his job. 

Ten Hag has also recently finished his second season at the club, leading them to triumph in the FA Cup over crosstown rivals Manchester City; however, under him, the Red Devils sunk to their worst finish in Premier League history, 8th. 

The club's leadership is currently reviewing his season, and it is reported that he will get the sack after the process. 

Speaking to Sky Sports, the 72-year-old believes that his countryman still has more to contribute at Manchester United, as he has shown that he is a good manager; however, he was also honest enough to admit that Ten Hag has been less than stellar. 

"Of course, he shouldn't be sacked," Van Gaal said. "But I also needed more time at Manchester United. 

“I won the FA Cup, and for 20 years before me, no United manager had won it. Now Erik is winning the FA Cup and also qualified for the Champions League in his first year. 

“So I don’t think you have to sack him. He needs more time, but I can also be more critical. He has not done it fantastically—you can give criticism—but he has also shown he is a good manager."
