Chelsea legend John Terry has given his honest assessment of current head coach Enzo Maresca, praising the Italian’s impact on the squad while also raising concerns about the club’s transfer strategy.
Terry, widely regarded as Chelsea’s greatest ever captain, has been a strong supporter of Maresca since his arrival, highlighting the Italian’s man-management skills and ability to integrate academy talent into the first team.
What Terry said
Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT this week, the former Blues captain said he has been “very impressed” with Maresca’s early work since taking charge at Stamford Bridge.
“I’ve been very impressed with him to be honest,” Terry said.
He added, “He’s very inviting with me as I’m obviously working in the academy. I get to see him work and he’s very personal with the players. I think the biggest thing for any manager this year is being close to the players, and he seems to have a really good connection with the younger players.
“He’s very young himself. He understands the players, he understands what they want and he’s certainly getting the best out of them at the moment.”
However, the former defender also cast a critical eye on Chelsea’s recruitment policy, urging the club to focus on marquee signings to complement their youthful core.
His remarks mirror those of ex-teammate Joe Cole, who recently suggested that Chelsea should have strengthened in goal, branding Robert Sánchez the “weakest link” in the squad’s Champions League ambitions.
