The 22-year-old midfielder, who came on as a substitute in the 83rd minute, was shown a yellow card in injury time for confronting Gabriel Gudmundsson following a strong tackle on the Leeds defender.

The Football Association (FA) is reviewing claims made by supporters in the away section, while Lancashire Police are also “establishing the facts” surrounding the alleged incident. A complaint was reportedly made by a Leeds fan who was in attendance during the match.

According to sources, the FA has not yet launched a full investigation but is expected to do so this week, with player and witness interviews likely to form part of the process.

Mark Clattenburg, former Premier League referee, told Leeds News about the potential consequences: “The Football Association will interview players, fans and study available video before making any charges. If charged, Hannibal could receive a suspension which the Football Association will determine, and I think will be at least three matches.”

Lancashire Police issued a statement confirming their involvement: “Lancashire Police are aware of an alleged incident involving a Burnley player during the second half of the Premier League game between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor (October 18). We are currently working with Burnley Football Club to establish the facts.”

While Leeds United are aware of the claims, the club has yet to issue a public comment. Burnley, who secured the win at home, have also declined to comment on the matter.

The alleged spitting incident falls under the IFAB Laws of the Game, which the FA enforces, and is classified as violent conduct. Such behavior carries a minimum six-game ban if the player is found guilty.

The 22-year-old, who spent part of his youth career at Manchester United, has shown glimpses of creativity and flair in midfield since joining Burnley. However, an incident of this nature could overshadow his on-field performances and impact his reputation in English football.

Former referees and football analysts have highlighted that video evidence and fan testimonies will play a crucial role in determining whether charges are filed. The FA typically examines multiple angles, including stadium CCTV and player interactions on the pitch, before issuing any disciplinary action.

Burnley now  face potential scrutiny not only for Mejbri’s alleged actions but also for the wider question of crowd safety and behavior at Turf Moor. Meanwhile, supporters from both sides await clarity on the incident, which has sparked debate on social media and football forums.

Hannibal Mejbri’s future availability for Burnley’s upcoming fixtures could hinge on the FA’s decision, making the review a high-stakes process for both the player and his club.

Until the investigation concludes, the midfielder’s conduct remains a topic of intense discussion within English football circles.
