Four Manchester United fans are feared dead after a tragic incident in Bamburi Mwisho area, Nyali Constituency, Mombasa County, where a septic tank collapsed beneath a makeshift football viewing hall on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred around 6pm as dozens of fans had gathered to watch a Premier League clash between Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The viewing hall had reportedly been constructed directly over the old septic tank, which gave way during the match, sending several people plunging into the cavity below.
As reported by Citizen TV, Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Noor stated that "the hall had been constructed directly over the septic tank, which suddenly caved in.”
The tragedy unfolded during a high-stakes match that saw Manchester United suffer a rare Easter Sunday defeat at Old Trafford.
Wolves clinched a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to Pablo Sarabia’s second-half free-kick, a result that left many fans disappointed — though the focus quickly shifted from football to fear as the disaster became clear.
Rescue teams responded quickly to the scene, and operations are still ongoing as authorities attempt to determine the exact number of individuals trapped under the rubble.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic, with residents rushing to try and help before emergency crews arrived.
"We just heard a loud rumble and screams," said one local who was watching from outside the hall told reporters.
"It was terrible. People were running everywhere. Some fell into the hole and didn’t come back up.”
The viewing hall, a simple structure erected by the local community, had become a popular gathering spot for football fans in the area.
Locals have now raised serious concerns about safety standards and oversight.
Many are calling on the Mombasa County Government to investigate how such a hazardous structure was allowed to operate.
“This is not just an accident, it’s a failure of oversight,” said a resident.
“We need accountability and immediate action to make sure no more lives are lost.”

Back at Old Trafford, while the footballing world digested United’s shock loss, the real tragedy was unfolding thousands of miles away.
In the match itself, United had more possession and created more chances, but failed to convert.
Lindelof captained a rotated squad that included debutant Tyler Fredricson and a rested Bruno Fernandes.
Despite their efforts, Sarabia's set-piece strike stood as the difference.
Rescue efforts continue into the night as families of those feared trapped are holding out hope.
Emergency personnel have sealed off the area as they use heavy machinery and manual efforts to retrieve bodies and any potential survivors.
