Stockport County midfielder Tyler Onyango has hailed Benni McCarthy as he opened up about his chances of representing Kenya in the near future.
The Harambee Stars prospect, who is on loan to Stockport from Premier League club Everton, revealed that he is open to switching his allegiance from England to Kenya as he noted what has delayed his move.
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy also expressed interest in having Tyler Onyango in his squad, and it would have been a desire to even have him at the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where Kenya lost 3-1 to The Gambia and won 5-0 over Seychelles.

Speaking on the Added Time podcast, Tyler Onyango noted that if he made the move, he would have made his father and family proud.
Tyler Onyango: It’s Definitely Something I’ll Consider
Tyler Onyango revealed that his priority at the moment is to get more playing time and work on his techniques before making that switch.
“It’s something I’ve thought about, and in the future, it’s something I’m open to and will look at. My main priority this season is club football and getting a good run of games, but maybe in the next 12 months it’s definitely something I’ll consider. It would make my dad and family proud, and it’s an achievement you can never take lightly,” Tyler Onyango said.

Tyler Onyango believes that Benni McCarthy is what Harambee Stars need to move to the next level, owing to his professionalism.
The Harambee Stars prospect noted that, having worked at the highest level, as Manchester United’s attacking coach, Benni McCarthy has already showcased his abilities.
Benni McCarthy recently guided Harambee Stars to the quarterfinal of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), something that stood out for Tyler Onyango. The South African took over as Harambee Stars coach in March.
“He’s coached at the highest level with Manchester United and knows what good looks like. That can only do good things for a national team, even looking at the performances in the recent tournament. As a player, it’s attractive to work under someone with that kind of experience,” Tyler Onyango added.
Tyler Onyango also highlighted the competitiveness and excitement of African football, emphasising the influence African players have had in the Premier League.
