EURO 2024: German-Nigerian Musiala and Boniface's teammate Wirtz become first 21-year-olds to start and score for Germany
Germany got their EURO 2024 campaign off to a flying start with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Scotland, thanks to a standout performance from their young stars Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz.
The night belonged to the dynamic duo of Musiala and Wirtz, who became the first 21-year-olds to start for Germany in a major tournament.
Musiala and Wirtz Make History
Wirtz, who plays with Nigeria's Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella at Bayer Leverkusen, further etched his name in the history books by becoming the youngest scorer for Die Mannschaft.
Germany dominated the game from start to finish with the hosts in imperious form in the first half, racing to a 3-0 lead.
Wirtz opened the floodgates in the 10th minute before Musiala doubled the advantage nine minutes later.
Niclas Füllkrug added a third before an own goal from Antonio Rüdiger gave Scotland a glimmer of hope.
However, Emre Can restored Germany's three-goal cushion to seal a comfortable victory.
Missed Opportunities for Wirtz
Although Wirtz and Musiala were the stars of the show, Wirtz especially could have added to his tally.
Wirtz missed an early sitter, but the Leverkusen star midfielder made amends with his opening goal. Musiala also had chances to further extend Germany's lead.
The emphatic win will give Germany a massive boost as they look to lift the trophy on home soil.
Musiala and Wirtz's performances have demonstrated the depth of talent in Julian Nagelmann’s squad, and they will be key to the team's success in the tournament.
