Elephants are back: Nwankwo Kanu’s Enyimba hit ‘next Enyeama’ twice to go top in shock away win
Enyimba, led by chairman Nwankwo Kanu, surged to the top of the NPFL table with a shock 2-0 away victory over Bayelsa United, overcoming the highly rated goalkeeper Clinton Andy, who has been hailed as the “next Enyeama.”
Nigeria’s most decorated club, Enyimba, are back firmly in the title race after a commanding performance against the Prosperity Boys.
The visitors showed why they are the league’s most successful side, silencing Bayelsa United and their standout keeper, widely compared to Super Eagles legends Vincent Enyeama and Stanley Nwabali.
Going into the game, Enyimba held a modest record of one win and two draws from their opening three matches, while Bayelsa United came in with two wins and a defeat, which has now extended to back-to-back defeats.
The first half was tightly contested with a scoreless 45 minutes, during which Enyimba’s Bassey missed a crucial one-on-one chance against Andy. However, in the second half, Stanley Eguma’s men raised their intensity.
The breakthrough came in the 76th minute when Chidera netted to put Enyimba ahead. Just nine minutes later, Nweke doubled their lead, securing a deserved win and valuable three points.
