Police have announced road closures and diversions ahead of Sunday’s kickoff of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 tournament in Nairobi, urging motorists to plan their travel in advance to avoid major delays.
The high-profile continental football tournament will begin on Sunday, August 3, 2025, and is expected to attract thousands of fans from across Africa. To ensure the smooth movement of teams, officials, and spectators—and to maintain security—authorities have outlined a detailed traffic management plan.

Nairobi Traffic Commandant, Joseph Chirchir, issued a comprehensive traffic advisory on Thursday, outlining both the affected routes and the recommended detours for motorists. The update comes amid increased preparations for CHAN matches to be held in multiple venues within the capital.
Roads to be Closed or Partially Restricted
In the advisory, Mr. Chirchir confirmed that Aerodrome Road will be completely closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout, starting Sunday morning as per Daily Nation.
Additionally, one side of Langata Road between Madaraka and Lusaka roundabouts and one side of Mombasa Road from Lusaka to Bunyala roundabout will also be inaccessible to the public.
He added that traffic officers will be deployed strategically across affected areas to guide motorists and manage the expected congestion.
Alternative Routes and Advisory for Motorists
To ease movement, the police have provided several alternative routes. Motorists on Mombasa Road heading toward the city centre are advised to use Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.
For those approaching the CBD from Langata Road, Chirchir recommended diverting via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at Mbagathi Roundabout.
Travelers from the Central Business District heading to Thika Road, Juja, Ruiru, and Thika are urged to use either Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.
The same applies to motorists already on Thika Road, who are advised to consider Eastern Bypass, Limuru Road, or Kiambu Road to avoid potential delays near the stadium routes.
For fans heading to Kasarani Stadium, public service vehicles should follow the Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road, then Ngomongo Road to reach the Ngomongo Roundabout, which leads directly to the venue.
The traffic plan will remain in effect throughout the duration of the tournament, depending on match schedules and crowd patterns.
Nairobi residents are advised to stay updated through local bulletins and official police channels for any further changes in the traffic plan during the CHAN 2024 tournament.
